Karwar – Visiting Secluded Places In Rains

Share

We planned the trip of 4 nights from Bangalore to Karwar. It was all train journey as we feel more comfortable in train than car.
Bangalore (6.50 PM) to Murdeshwar (6.00 AM) – Panchganga Exp
Day 1 : Stay at Murdeshwar (1 Night) – Stayed in RNS Highway Hotel
Day 2 : Murdeshwar (09.22 AM) to Karwar (11.15 AM) -MAQ MAO SPL exp
Day 2, 3, 4 : Stay at Karwar for 3 Nights at Sterling resort.
Day 5 : Karwar (6 PM) to Bangalore (7.15 AM) – Panchganga Exp

We can reduce a night stay but our purpose was to enjoy the trip leisurely and slowly.

Places to see in Karwar and nearby

After visiting Murdeshwar, we headed by train to Karwar which is just 2 hours journey. There were at least three rivers the train passed. The view were scenic with lot of green fields, mountains and rivers across with drizzling off and on. I think we should visit the West coast in rainy season. Of course sometimes you will get wet but getting drench, standing under some shade to save ourselves, cool and water bearing winds inside auto is a wonderful experience rather that going in summer season or cold season.
Where we get wet in our life in modern world of AC trains and cars. Our Karwar experience was the same.

We got down at this small station of just 2 platforms. It looked a hill station railway station.
Just auto was available immediately and he dropped us at 15 KM away Sterling Resort for Rs. 150.
I observed that in Karwar the auto guys in entire Karwar have fixed rates. Auto service not not annoying.
Actually we travelled to Karwar just for a change and not really for tourism. Still defeated by habit we could not resist visiting the main attractions of Karwar.
Day 1 – Took rest in hotel and enjoyed comfort of hotel.
I went out to auto stand and fixed auto for Rs. 900 but actually I preferred the auto provided by hotel to be safe and without any risk.
Day 2 – We covered Local tour to Karwar on this day.
Durga mandir, Dargah, St. Joseph church, Mahamaya temple, Mudigeri dam and Devbag beach.
The auto came exactly at 9.30 and dropped us at hotel at 5 PM.

Devbag beach and Bhimkol dam

It is OK place and looks good due to its greenery, serenity and a huge lake for which this dame is made. There was almost no crowd. I wonder Karwar has so many lakes but Government has not made any real effort to convert it into hot tourist spots. Even my driver told me that he rarely brought any tourists to Mudigere dam. But it is worth seeing in rainy season.

Actually Devbag beach is mainly meant for fishermen as we can see many boats and fish nets and fishermen. We can not say that this beach is really meant for tourists but we enjoyed the place as none else was here except us. I really felt I am Robinson Crusoe and left here in abandoned place.

Day 3 – Somethings we had not covered yesterday so we called the same auto guy at 10 AM. He charged us Rs. 300 for dropping at Ravindra Nath Tagore beach and picking us back at 4.30 PM.
If we are at Tagore beach we can cover Maruti temple, Kali River ( on way), Rock garden, Acquarium, 1971 war Ship chapal and Nagnath on foot itself ( total 5 KM walk).

We had a nice food in a restaurant in main market (about 1 KM from beach). The food was very good.
There are lot of good restaurant in Karwar main market. You can enjoy the food here.

Day 4 – We spent whole day in hotel and boarded the train for Blore at 6 PM to reach banglore at 7.15 AM.

What we missed seeing in local Karwar
Nimrat Park, Golari Falls, Anshi Waterfalls.

Epilogue

Karwar as such may not have so lucrative and glamourous places to see in its bag but being coastal region of Karnataka, it has some kind of innocent, immature babyish and serene beauty that we can stay here for 2 days and visit places which are nature but not so popular among general public. I recommend to see Karwar in rainy season as it is still away from man made concrete.

It is also a center point for visiting Gokarna, Murdeshwar, North-South Goa, Dandeli, Gokarna, Yana caves and Mirjan fort. There direct trains available and these places are in reach of 4 hours time.
