Comparatively less known but it was second capital of great Chola kingdom in 1000 AD for 250 years. This was built by Rajendra Chola-I, son of Rajaraja-I who built Thanjavur Brihdishwara temple. Both temples 70 KM apart are named as Bridheswara temple. This is UNESCO World Heritage declared in 2004.
